| KGIS data is provided as web services implementing the OGC WMS and WFS specifications. If you have an OGC WMS or WFS compliant client you can access the KGIS data online.
The connection string to the KGIS WMS (OGC Web Map Service) is:
http://www.kgis.scar.org:7070/geoserver/wms?
The WMS capabilities document can be requested at (save as XML document):
http://www.kgis.scar.org:7070/geoserver/wms?SERVICE=WMS&REQUEST=GetCapabilities
There is an old WMS service, now deprecated and should not be used any more.
The connection string to this deprecated KGIS WebMapService is:
http://www.kgis.scar.org/cgi-bin/kgis_wms?
The connection string to the KGIS WFS (OGC Web Feature Service) is:
http://www.kgis.scar.org:7070/geoserver/wfs?
The WFS capabilities document can be requested at:
http://www.kgis.scar.org:7070/geoserver/wfs?SERVICE=WFS&REQUEST=GetCapabilities
The KGIS WFS service maybe temporarily unavailable from 2008-03-10 until 2008-03-12 due to service maintenance. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
Many software packages can access OGC Services. If you for example are a user of ESRI's ArcGIS (TM) you might use ArcCatalog to connect to the KGIS WMS. In ArcCatalog you would browse to GIS Servers and then double cklick on 'Add WMS'. Supply the connection string as URL and press Get Layers. Now the KGIS WMS is added to your GIS Servers and you can readily use it in ArcMap.
If the free and open source desktop GIS uDig is your preferred GIS package you would import the KGIS WMS/WFS services to the catalog by simply adding it as WMS or WFS data source.
These are just examples. There are many more products that can act as a client and use OGC WMS or WFS!
The services are provided in the following projections¹:
- WGS 84 / UTM zone 21S [EPSG Code 32721]
- WGS 84 / Antarctic Polar Stereographic (as used in the SCAR ADD) [EPSG Code 3031]
