The SCAR Feature
The data is provided referenced to WGS 84 datum. This makes it readily usable for work with GPS. For most applications WGS84 can be considered reasonable close to the high precise ITRF2000 reference frame.

Care must be taken on data standards and data quality in order to facilitate exchange and to avoid misuse of the data. The data model and standards are be based on SCAR specifications. These specifications are being developed by the Expert Group Geographic Information (EGGI) of SCAR. The EGGI project "SCAR Spatial Data Model" (SDM) currently strives to establish specifications and guidelines that support an enabling framework for easy retrieval and exchange of spatial data and for distribtuted geoprocessing whithin the Antarctic Spatial Data Infrastructure. This work is based on the emerging ISO/TC 211 group of standards on spatial data and on the OpenGeospatial Consortium specifications.

KGIS implements the SCAR Feature Catalogue which is following ISO 19110. KGIS data can be accessed through interfaces that implement OGC web service interfaces.

The SCAR SDM project is co-ordinated by the Australian Antarcic Division. The KGIS Project actively participates in the SDM project and provides an excellent testbed for the developed specifications.
