Remnants of human activities are often expensive and difficult to remove. Rusting and leaking oil these old vehicles had been waiting for years on the beach to be brought out of Antarctica. With support from the NGO Mission Antarctica the vehicles have been removed for recycling in South America in 2002.

Raw data provided by a wide variety of institutions is collected at IPG Freiburg. These data are integrated by referencing to a common reference system and common semantics, and by documenting the respective metadata. The final products are available as OGC webservices to plug into OGC enabled applications, as GIS data sets in the download area (shapefiles) or as customizable PDF maps through the interactive map viewer.
